Personal Development and Wellbeing

Personal Development and Wellbeing at John Gulson

At John Gulson Primary School, we want every child to feel safe, valued and confident about their future. Personal Development and Wellbeing runs through our curriculum, relationships and wider school experiences, helping children understand themselves, care for others and discover what they can achieve.

Our school drivers of Wellness, Empowerment and Communication shape this approach. We help children recognise and express their feelings, build positive relationships, make thoughtful choices and develop the confidence to ask for help. Our values and our rules—Ready, Respectful, Safe—give children opportunities to practise kindness, responsibility, resilience and respect every day.

Through PSHE, Relationships and Health Education, assemblies and everyday conversations, children learn about physical and emotional health, friendships, personal safety and staying safe online. We celebrate our multicultural community, helping children appreciate different cultures, faiths and perspectives, understand fundamental British values and challenge prejudice and discrimination.

Children also need opportunities to explore who they are and who they might become. Clubs, visits, creative activities, sport and experiences such as Special Interests Week help them discover interests, develop talents and try something new. We encourage children to share their aspirations and recognise that their future holds many possibilities.

Pastoral care is central to this work. Trusted adults, our Oasis nurture provision, lunch clubs and targeted support offer children time and space to talk, reflect and develop strategies for managing difficult feelings. Approaches such as the Zones of Regulation help children understand their emotions and identify what can help. We work with families and other professionals when additional support is needed, and listen carefully to children’s views about the care they receive.

We believe these opportunities belong to every child. We seek to remove barriers for children with SEND, disadvantaged children, those learning English and children facing challenging circumstances, adapting support so they can participate meaningfully. We celebrate each child’s growing confidence, independence and sense of belonging, recognising that a small step can represent an important achievement.

At John Gulson, our ambition is for this work to make a lasting difference: children who understand how to stay healthy and safe, build respectful relationships, grow in confidence and independence, and feel prepared for their next steps.
