Year 1
Inspiring Learning Through Continuous Provision in Year 1
In Year 1, we proudly deliver the National Curriculum through an Early Excellence continuous provision approach, ensuring children experience a smooth and confident transition from the Early Years into Key Stage 1, grounded in our school values. We work closely with the Early Excellence team and have a lead consultant who meets with us once every half-term to support and develop our practice.
Our carefully planned learning environment enables children to access all areas of the National Curriculum through purposeful, hands-on experiences. High-quality continuous provision supports the teaching of reading, writing, mathematics and the wider curriculum, allowing children to revisit, practise and deepen their learning in meaningful ways throughout the day.
Teaching is intentional and well-structured. Key knowledge and skills from the National Curriculum are introduced through focused teaching and then embedded through continuous provision, where children are encouraged to apply their learning independently. Skilled adults support this process through high-quality interactions, questioning and timely intervention, ensuring appropriate challenge and strong progress for every child.
This approach values children as active learners, promoting independence, resilience and sustained concentration while maintaining high expectations. By combining the rigour of the National Curriculum with the strengths of continuous provision, we create a learning environment where children flourish academically, socially and emotionally, and where the joy of learning remains central to school life.
Extending Continuous Provision into Year 2 (2026–2027)
Building on the success of our continuous provision approach in Year 1, we are excited to share our plans to extend this model into Year 2 from the 2026–2027 academic year.
This next step reflects our commitment to meeting children where they are developmentally, while continuing to deliver the full National Curriculum in a way that is engaging, purposeful and ambitious. As children progress into Year 2, learning will remain carefully structured and progressive, with key knowledge and skills taught explicitly through high-quality teaching and then strengthened through well-planned continuous provision.
The Year 2 learning environment will be designed to promote independence, collaboration and deeper thinking. Continuous provision will provide opportunities for children to apply and consolidate their learning in reading, writing, mathematics and the wider curriculum, encouraging them to make connections, practise skills and develop greater ownership of their learning.
Adults will continue to play a vital role, using precise assessment, targeted teaching and high-quality interactions to ensure children are challenged appropriately and supported to achieve high standards. Expectations for learning, behaviour and outcomes will remain high, preparing children confidently for the next stage of their education.
By extending continuous provision into Year 2, we aim to maintain momentum, nurture confident learners and ensure that learning remains meaningful, inclusive and joyful, while firmly rooted in the expectations of the National Curriculum.
