Dear Parents and Carers,

This term we will be introducing a new banded reading system for our home reading books in Key Stage Two. By introducing the new scheme we hope to:

  • More closely match books to children’s reading ability
  • Provide an interesting and varied reading experience for our children

The bands are organised into two groups:

  • Pink to White band – early and developing reader bands
  • Lime to Ruby band – confident and experienced reader bands

Key stage two will focus on Lime to Ruby band.

Once the children reach Lime band, children will be confident readers. At this point, they will stay on a book band for a long while, as there are lots of different and exciting books to read in each band. We know that children like to have a wide variety of books to read, so they will still be able to pick a book of their choice from the school library, as well as their home reader.

Reading is a high priority at John Gulson Primary School and we believe it is at the heart of all children’s learning. This new system should help to develop your children’s reading skills and allow them to explore more books so they can find a love for reading.

If you have any questions about the new system and what this might mean for your child, I will be available at the front of school on Monday 14th January to answer any questions you might have.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr MacKintosh
